Yes, for astronomy, get binos with the biggest objective lens you can afford.
I have 15x80. The 80mm objective will gather 4 times as much light as the 40mm. That means you will see objects 2 magnitudes dimmer with the 80mm than 40mm.
Looking at the Milky Way with 80mm binos has to be one of the best low cost amateur astronomy experience - nebulae, star clusters are there in amazing abundance.
I always tell new kids to astronomy, don't get a telescope to start with. Get some good binoculars and find your way around the sky.
That is much more difficult with a telescope, due to its limited field of view.
Also, if you want to find comets when they make appearance, binoculars are the thing.
Everyone here seems to be asking what they need to see the planets, and the truth is, you need a big telescope to really see planet stuff. So, unless you have thousands of dollars, don't get too excited about the planets. Most new people to astronomy are very disappointed when they see the planets through telescopes that you usually find in the scope shops.
get good binoculars to learn the sky.
TIP: when you test binolculars, make sure when you have them focussed, that the focus is clear all the way to the edge of the field of view. Inferior binoculars have good focus only at center.
