A good chunk of your £500 budget will be eaten up by the BCA's excessive buyer's indemnity charges.
This means that realistically you're looking at bidding more like £350-£400 for something.
For that sort of money you're not going to be snatching any bargains as people with a better knowledge of that end of the market will be looking to make profit (and the traders pay smaller indemnity).
It seems that you don't have a lot of auction experience so
I think you'd be far better of buying from a private seller out of the Auto Trader or eBay.
You'll also get more time to inspect and consider your purchase, thus making you less likely to make a mistake.

started my new job last Monday at the British Car Auctions…woo hoo!
craigslist or auto trader.you'll find cars cheaper here than you will ever looking at online auctions.
Don't go the auction route! This is for those who have a good knowledge of cars and even they get caught out now and then. At £500 you are in the banger end of the market and you would do better to go by condition rather than year. With that sort of money i would tend to keep an eye on ebay for an Astra with the 1686cc Isuzu diesel engine.
