Are you talking about a public auction ? A regular weekly auction you have to be a dealer.
I will assume you are talking about a public auction, So i will give advice on that one.
!. Go to your bank and get a letter of guarantee, This will allow you to buy cars without taking a bunch of cash. But it is your call to bring cash.
2. When you get there, hours before it starts, you have to be checked in;
(A) Checking in, You must have guaranteed finances, You will receive a bidder badge,List of their rules,list of cars available.
3. Check to see if they have arbitration, should be in your list of rules.
4. Make sure that you have a way to get the vehicle out of there that day. It might be required, No you can't drive it home.
5. Bidding-Do not get into a bidding war, This is the number one mistake that ALL dealers will make, It's like, who has the bigger KAHONIES.
6. If you are bidding on a car, know who you are bidding against, You might be bidding against "Ghosts"&"Zombies"
GHOST- the auctioneer acts like there is another bidder, he makes money on jacking up the price from different sources, trust me!
ZOMBIES- Someone has money invested in the car, So they are trying to increase profit or decrease loss. The latter more often than not!
7. The biggest thing about bidding on a vehicle is knowing when to walk away!!!

Most large auto auctions in the USA are open only to dealers and not the general public. A bidder must have the proper credential to bid at dealer auctions and payment is expected in full and either by cash, approved business check or funds transfer at the end of the business day.

You would have to do a search for "public auto auctions" to find one in your area that is open to the public, but again, they are going to want payment in full on any car you buy on the day of the auction.
